Umno braces for two major decisions at tonight's supreme council meeting

KUALA LUMPUR: The Umno Supreme Council meeting tonight has become the focus of many following several major decisions expected to be adopted by the policy-making body.

The decisions are likely to be on the party polls as well as the fate of several party leaders allegedly linked to acts of sabotage and criticising the party's leadership.

Based on party president, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's remarks yesterday, the meeting tonight will likely see the carrying out of large-scale cleansing, which indirectly signals possible sacking of some leaders.

The fate of former Rembau Member of Parliament, Khairy Jamaluddin is also expected to be known tonight after he allegedly violated party discipline over his vocal criticism of party leaders.

The former health minister had publicly 'criticised' some Umno leaders, as well as speaking out on president and deputy president's posts to be contested to ensure that democratic practices in the party are not buried.

The former Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate who lost in the 15th General Election (GE15) in the Sungai Buloh Parliament last November, also publicly announced that he wanted to 'cleanse' Umno if he won the seat.

The former Umno Youth chief also attracted attention at the 2022 Umno General Assembly recently when he claimed that there was 'imported representation' during the voting process for the additional motion to not contest the president and deputy president, which was denied by the party leadership.

Apart from Khairy, it is believed that former Selangor Umno liaison chief Tan Sri Noh Omar as well as several Umno Tanjong Karang leaders' fates will be known tonight.

Noh who is the Tanjong Karang Umno Division chief allegedly was involved in sabotaging the party in the GE15.

Umno secretary general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan yesterday confirmed that the supreme council meeting will also decide the date of the party polls, including for its highest office.

He said the Umno election involved party polls at the branch and division levels, which are expected to be held simultaneously for 191 divisions across the country, including electing its top leadership.

For the record, as decided through additional motions at the 2022 Umno General Assembly, the two top posts in the party will not be contested.
