Zahid on Umno opting not to go solo in polls

KUALA LUMPUR: Choosing not to go solo is to avoid overlapping of seats with other parties in the unity government, said Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The deputy prime minister said, however, that Barisan Nasional would still continue using its "dacing" (scales) symbol when contesting in any elections.

"We are now a component party in the unity government. Therefore, to prevent issues such as seat overlapping, we must work together, but we will continue using the dacing symbol.

"This is also what we will do in the Mahkota by-election, so all sides respect and allow the party that previously held the seat to contest it again.

"So, that is what I mean by not going solo, we need to work together and use our own symbol," he told reporters at the Seri Pacific Hotel here, today.

In his policy speech earlier today, Zahid had hinted that Umno may not go it alone in the next general election.

He said Umno members alone could not secure the party's victory and said the decisive factor would be non-members, who make up a larger percentage and number.
