KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat was reminded of the dangers of drug abuse and addiction, with an anecdote by Langkawi member of Parliament Datuk Mohd Suhaimi Abdullah.
The first-time parliamentarian told the story of a single mother in Perak, whose breast was cut off by her only son.
Her son, he said, had asked for money from his mother to buy drugs.
"The woman is a nasi lemak seller. She had told her son that it had been raining for three days, so she had no money to give him.
"She said her son had repeatedly asked for money and when she didn't give him any, he went to the kitchen, grabbed a knife, snatched her necklace off her neck and cut off her left breast.
"The woman's injury had turned black and she told me she put coffee and sugar to dry up the wound.
"She was afraid to go to the hospital (to seek treatment) because she didn't want the police to catch her son. This is a mother's love," he said during his debate on the royal address today.
Suhaimi, who is also the Drug Prevention Association of Malaysia deputy president, then pointed out that because of drugs, a son was willing to bite the hand that fed him.
He also urged Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (Muda-Muar) and RSN Rayer (Pakatan Harapan-Jelutong to take action, as they were part of the government.
Earlier, Syed Saddiq had asked if Suhaimi agreed that the government should take an approach to treat drug addicts instead of punishing them to reduce drug addiction.
Rayer, meanwhile, had asked if Suhaimi suggested that urine tests should be done for airline pilots to ensure the safety of passengers.
To this, Suhaimi said: "Like I said to Muar, I rarely accept (the views of) Jelutong but today I want it to be on record (in the hansard).
"You are in the government now, and you (should) enforce this."
