Umno president hints of candidates risk being disqualified

KOTA KINABALU: Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi reminded party election campaign managers and agents to ensure that their candidates strictly adhere to the regulations.

"We have the Umno Selection Committee, and there are regulations set. I hope agents and campaign managers will remind their candidates to follow the existing regulations.

"I am afraid there will be those who might lose their eligibility. I got to know from the committee that there are such cases.

"What I am afraid most is that the committee can disqualify those who have won the posts," he said during the Sabah Umno candidates' introductory event here today.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also deputy prime minister, said Sabah Umno had faced many challenges whether it was inter-party outside of Barisan Nasional or intra-party between BN and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah.

However, he is confident that Sabah Umno will continue to stay relevant under the leadership of state liaison chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin.

Earlier, Sabah Umno deputy chairman Datuk Yakub Khan said that he was giving a speech at the event as Bung was defending his position as the supreme council member.

Yakub added that all 25 divisions in Sabah had completed their elections. It saw eight division leaders win without being challenged.

The divisions are Sepanggar, Penampang, Papar, Kimanis, Sandakan, Libaran and Kinabatangan.

He said Lahad Datu had the most contestants with a six-cornered fight.

Recently, Sabah Umno saw four of its assemblymen joining Parti Gagasan Harapan Rakyat Sabah.
