KOTA KINABALU: The Home Ministry has legitimised Umno General Assembly's motion not to have any contest for the top two posts.
Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi confirmed that the party secretary general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan has received a letter from the ministry accepting the resolution.
"(This shows that) The permanent chairman had followed all the regulations in the meetings including the general assembly.
"It has to be known that the general assembly is the highest decision-making body in Umno," he said tonight.
Earlier, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has confirmed that Umno has been given an exemption under the Societies Act 1966 (Act 832) regarding the resolution for no contests for the posts of president and deputy president passed during the party's 2022 general assembly.
"In this case, the minister's power is the ultimate in validating the 2022 general assembly motion."
When asked about the viral letter purportedly from the Registrar of Societies Malaysia (RoS), Zahid said he has no knowledge about it.
The letter had indicated that the no-contest for top two positions in Umno motion as invalid.
RoS comes under the Home Ministry's purview.
