Pas leaders sign Dr Mahathir's Malay Proclamation

KUALA LUMPUR: Several leaders from Pas have signed the 'Malay Proclamation' – a brainchild of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad which aimed to unite and save the Malay community.

In a Facebook post today, the political aide to Dr Mahathir, Abu Bakar Yahya posted several photos of the leaders, including Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang signing the document.

"Led by Hadi, several Pas leaders have signed the document to support the Malay proclamation in Dr Mahathir's presence," he said in the post.

Meanwhile, in a separate post, the 'Proklamasi Orang Melayu' Facebook page confirmed that the meeting took place last night, with several Pas leaders in attendance including its vice president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan and Pas' Bachok member of parliament Mohd Syahir Che Sulaiman.

In the video posted on the page, Hadi said he supported the proclamation based on Islamic principles.

He also dismissed that the proclamation was racist in nature but claimed that the Malays were instead the 'original' race in the country.

"We must return to the Islamic principles. If we read the al-Quran, all of the prophets who champion Islam started it on the basis of race and religion.

"Not that we are race fanatic but that is the principle," Hadi said.

The Malay Proclamation, written by Dr Mahathir is a 12-point document which touched on the issues faced by the Malays that causes uncertainties over their future.

It also aimed to unite the Malay community who have been divided by current issues.
