PH-BN to form next Penang govt with two-third majority

GEORGE TOWN: The Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional coalition is well on its way to form the next state government with a two-third majority.

Announcing this today, caretaker Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the PH-BN coalition won a total of 29 seats.

He said DAP won 19 seats, PKR (seven), Amanah (one) and Barisan Nasional (two seats).

DAP contested in 19 seats, PKR (13 seats), Amanah (two seats) and BN (six seats).

"The future is still filled with challenges. We will analyse and see where we need to improve.

"We will ensure this PH-BN government fulfills the aspiration and wishes of the people," he said.

Penang has a total of 40 state seats.

It takes 27 seats to form a government with a two-third majority.

Earlier, Pakatan Harapan's candidate for the Bayan Lepas state seat, Azrul Mahathir Aziz, claimed victory for the seat.

He is considered a slayer after defeating state Perikatan Nasional chairman Datuk Dominic Lau Hoe Chai.

"Alhamdulillah, based on (unofficial result), I have won the Bayan Lepas state seat with a 2,454 vote-majority. There are still 1,400 votes which have yet to be counted.

"I have managed to defend the Bayan Lepas state seat. We will ensure to make good on the mandate given by the people to us," he said in a short video footage.

Azrul, from Amanah, thanked all the election machinery from Umno and Amanah who had helped him throughout.

"I also thank all the voters for choosing the unity government," he added.

Meanwhile, state Gerakan chairman Oh Tong Keong said the party accepted its defeat in the 19 seats they contested in.

"The people have made their decision and we accept them.

"Nevertheless, we will not give up. We will continue with our fight for the people.

"We will continue to play our role as a check-and-balance," he said.

Oh said the voters, particularly the Chinese, still preferred to choose between party lines rather than the candidates.

Besides Gerakan, Bersatu and Pas contested in 11 and 10 states respectively.

Meanwhile, Chow will be sworn in as the chief minister tomorrow.
