KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Disciplinary Board will look into explanations tendered by the party's Melaka assemblyman for attending a programme organised by Perikatan Nasional (PN) recently.
Umno secretary-general Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki was referring to the case of Rembia assemblyman Datuk Muhammad Jailani Khamis who was seen appearing at the announcement of PN candidates for by-elections in Pulai parliamentary constituency and Simpang Jeram state seat in Bakri, Johor on Wednesday.
Asyraf said the party needs to adhere to certain processes and procedures according to the party's Constitution when handling the issue surrounding Muhammad Jailani's case.
Among the procedures and processes, said Asyraf, included serving Muhammad Jailani with a show cause letter demanding the former Melaka tourism, heritage and culture committee chairman to explain his reason for attending the programme organised by PN.
"We have the processes (that the party needed to follow to manage Muhammad Jailani's case) in which we will start by issuing a show cause letter against the party leader.
"We will then ask him to respond to the show cause letter before deciding on the next course of action," he said when contacted today.
Asyraf also confirmed that the party has yet to issue the show cause letter against Muhammad Jailani.
"This is because we just received information on the case yesterday.
"We will provide update on the development of the case from time to time," he said.
Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was reported as saying yesterday that he had received a report on Muhammad Jailani attending the programme organised by PN.
Muhammad Jailani however defended his action saying that he attended the programme not in his capacity as an Umno assemblyman but representing non-governmental organisation Muafakat Nasional.
