KUALA LUMPUR: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia's Mohd Azizi Abu Naim has become the latest opposition member of parliament to declare his support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his unity government.
The Gua Musang MP joins fellow Bersatu MPs Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan) and Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar).
In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Azizi said his move to support Anwar had to be done for the sake and betterment of the people in his constituency.
"After carefully going over and listening to the presentation of the 2024 Budget by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim who is also the finance minister, who is striving to lead the country's economic recovery while easing the financial burden of the people of the country, I as the member of parliament for Gua Musang hereby declare my full support for the leadership of the prime minister from the date of issue of this media statement," he said in the statement.
Azizi, who contested on a Pas ticket during the 15th General Election, said the move would allow his constituents to enjoy all sorts of benefits and initiatives, including the upgrading of infrastructure facilities which he had requested for Gua Musang during his tenure.
"I would also like to state my support for the government's initiatives that prioritise the welfare of the people of this country until the next general election (GE16).
"To be honest, I do not intend on leaving or betraying Bersatu, but in order to ensure that the constituency of Gua Musang is able to prosper and be in line with the federal government, it is wise for me to be in line with the leadership in Putrajaya that is led by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
"To the good people of Gua Musang that I love and respect, let us pray together so that Allah S.W.T always blesses us and the land of Gua Musang where we can live peacefully and prosper by enjoying the development that we hope for."
Azizi's declaration of support for Anwar comes just after Bersatu announced that it had suspended Suhaili's membership in the party for six years for backing Anwar.
Two days earlier, Bersatu had also suspended Iskandar Dzulkarnain's membership, for four years
