NIBONG TEBAL: A total of nine polling centres with 65 voting streams for the Sungai Bakap state by-election opened simultaneously at 8am today.
The polling centres will be open until 6pm.
Earlier, the ballot boxes, under police escort, were taken out from the Dewan Serbaguna Jawi here about 6am to the respective polling centres.
A total of 39,151 voters are eligible to cast their votes today.
Vote-tallying will be done at the Dewan Serbaguna Jawi, with the official results expected to be announced later tonight.
The voting process will be managed by more than 500 Election Commission (EC) workers while more than 800 police personnel will be deployed for polling day duty.
The Sungai Bakap by-election was called following the death of its assemblyman Nor Zamri Latiff of Pas on May 24.
The by-election will see a straight fight between Pakatan Harapan's Dr Joohari Ariffin and Perikatan Nasional's Abidin Ismail.
In the state election last August, Nor Zamri defeated PKR's Nurhidayah Che Rose with a majority of 1,563 votes.
On Thursday, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail assured Sungai Bakap voters that they could come out to vote today without any worry or fear.
He said the 835 policemen on duty since nomination day on June 22 until today, would monitor the situation and ensure voters' safety.
