Become 'influencers', use social media to campaign, Zahid urges Umno

JOHOR BARU: Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has urged the party to embrace social media in campaigning for elections, saying it could reach millions of voters this way.

"We need to rethink our approaches. The old ways were suitable in the past, but now we need new approaches that fit the times. Give it a try.," he told delegates at the Tebrau Umno divisional meeting last night.

Zahid said if he only spoke to people in a hall, only 600 to 700 people would hear him.

"But if I speak on social media, if I do it 'live', then 100,000 people can see it.

"In fact, not just 100,000 but even one or two million can see (our videos) as long as we become influencers and produce good content," he said in his speech.

The Barisan Nasional chairman also said Umno could no longer rely on its traditional voters and must work to attract new voters and fence-sitters.

He said Umno must prioritise the "politics of service" in its efforts to combat the politics of hate and to attract Malay voters back to Umno.
