GUA MUSANG: Barisan Nasional has captured the Nenggiri state seat after its candidate won the Nenggiri by-election today.

BN's candidate Mohd Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani garnered 9,091 votes, defeating Perikatan Nasional's Rizwadi Ismail who received 5,739 votes.

Azmawi led with a majority of 3,352 votes, more than three times the majority garnered in state elections in August last year.

The official result for the Nenggiri state seat was announced by returning officer Nik Raisnan Daud at 9.30pm at Dewan Perdana, Gua Musang District Council.

The by-election recorded a turnout of 73.88 per cent of voters.

A total of 135 votes were rejected.

During the Kelantan state elections last August, PN, through Mohd Azizi Abu Naim wrested the seat from BN after he obtained a majority of 810 votes.

Azizi polled 6,517 votes to defeat Ab Aziz Yusoff of BN, who received 5,707 votes, in a straight fight.

This Nenggiri by-election was held after the seat was declared vacant by Kelantan state assembly speaker Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah on June 19, following Mohd Azizi's expulsion from Bersatu on June 13.

The electoral roll for the Nenggiri state constituency had 20,259 electors comprising 20,245 ordinary voters and 14 police personnel.

The state seat has been contested five times since 2004, with four won by BN and the most recent by Mohd Azizi.
