Zahid to chair meeting on Mahkota by-election next week

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he would chair a series of meetings next week to discuss matters related to the Mahkota state seat by-election in Johor.

The Barisan Nasional chairman and Umno president said the meetings would include the Johor Umno liaison committee and the top state BN leadership.

As of today, Zahid said Umno had yet to decide on the candidate who will represent the party in the by-election, which has been fixed for polling next month.

"Next week, I will chair a meeting with the state Umno liaison committee and, after that, with Johor BN.

"The outcome of the meetings will then be raised in the Umno political bureau before it is being discussed during the unity government secretariat meeting," he told reporters, here, today.

Zahid had previously said that Umno would not be using the same approach in the Nenggiri polls for the by-election in Mahkota.

He was reported as saying that the political landscape and demography in Mahkota differed significantly from those in Nenggiri.

It was reported that the Election Commission fixed Sept 14 for the nomination of candidates and Sept 28 for polling for the Mahkota by-election.

The seat fell vacant following the death of its assemblyman Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain on Aug 2.
