KUALA LUMPUR: Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has been urged to become the unifying force for Malays in the country.
Kedah Umno delegate Datuk Aminuddin Omar made this call, saying that Malays had become increasingly divided with the proliferation of Malay-based political parties.
"Historically, Malays had two main choices: Umno for those with moderate views and Pas for those with more extreme religious perspectives. However, today's Malays are even more fragmented due to the rise of additional parties, driven by greed and a quest for power.
"How much longer can we tolerate this division among Malays? It is not benefiting our community," he said during the debate on the presidential policy speech at the Umno General Assembly today.
Aminuddin also said that Umno must once again become a central pillar, working alongside Malay non-governmental organisations and other Malay political parties, to foster unity among Malays in the country.
"I am confident that our president, Zahid, is capable of leading this vital effort to restore the strength and unity of Malays in Malaysia.
"I urge the president to embrace this significant responsibility for the sake of our people, our religion, and our beloved country. We can no longer stand by as Malays continue to be divided and, in turn, harm our own community."
