Zahid: Don't assume Umno still a dominant party

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno should not assume that it is still a dominant party as it once was, said its president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said party members must be brave and face new ideas and diverse perspectives to remain relevant in an increasingly complex political landscape.

"Umno must break out of the echo chamber and its comfort zone. We should not assume that we are as dominant as we once were.

"Do not be swayed by the slanders and accusations of the opposition to the point where we foster doubt among ourselves.

"Do not become complacent with the little power that we have, forgetting our duty to strengthen the party," said Zahid in his policy speech at the Umno General Assembly today.

The deputy prime minister also questioned if going solo was the right thing to do in the current political climate.

"Based on data and sentiments, what advantages do we have? With the increase in new voters, can we influence their perceptions?

"Umno members alone cannot secure our victory. The decisive factor will be the voters out there, who make up a much larger percentage and number."

Zahid said the Nenggiri by-election had "awakened" Umno members, revitalised their spirit and, by addressing their previous weaknesses, led them to win in an opposition stronghold.

"Therefore, all this needs to be considered. If we want to build cooperation, in what form should it be done?

"Should we form cooperation before the elections, or do we make considerations only after it? This requires careful consideration.

"Whatever political manoeuvres or steps that we take, we will not sacrifice the interests of our multiracial nation."
