KOTA TINGGI: Choosing a candidate for the Sept 28 Mahkota state seat by-election is expected to be main topic of discussion when the Johor Umno liaison committee meets today.
Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is expected to attend the meeting at the menteri besar's official residence.
Party vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin today declined to disclose whether the party planned to retain the women's quota for the Mahkota seat.
"We have a meeting today with Johor Umno where the president will be present, so (the media) can ask (about the candidate).
"We are waiting for the meeting (to decide on whether to maintain the quota).
He said this after visiting the site of the Kelulut Sedili livestock knowledge transfer programme by Universiti Malaysia Terengganu in Kampung Sedili Kecil.
Khaled said Umno would work hard to defend the Mahkota seat.
"InsyaAllah, when we enter a competition, we want to win it. I don't want to make assumptions (about our chances of winning), but we will work hard."
The by-election was called following the death of Umno assemblyman Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, 63, on Aug 2.
