KUALA LUMPUR: Wanita Umno wants the candidate for the Mahkota state seat by-election in Johor to come from the women's wing.
Its chief Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad said the candidate should continue the legacy of the late Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain.
"This is a very important seat. In the 2018 elections, Barisan nasional lost in the seat by a majority of 1,668 votes.
"But, Sharifah Azizah won the seat with a vote-majority of more than 5,000. We hope that the Supreme Council members meeting tonight can raise our suggestion so the candidate for Mahkota remains from Wanita Umno."
She said this during her winding-up speech at the Wanita Umno assembly here today (Thursday).
Sharifah Azizah, who died on Aug 2, served as the Penawar assemblyman from May 2018 to March 2022, before being elected as the Mahkota representative on March 12, 2022. She was also the Kluang Wanita Umno division chief.
Earlier today, Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the party would take into consideration all suggestions in the selection process for the party's candidate in the Sept 28 polls.
He said this included potential names from the party's Youth and Wanita wings.
