Final preparations for Mahkota by-election underway

KLUANG: The Election Commission (EC) is finalising preparations to ensure smooth sailing in the Mahkota state seat by-election tomorrow morning, with just 24 hours to go.

This by-election will determine the successor to the late Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, the former assemblywoman who passed away in August.

EC secretary Datuk Ikmalrudin Ishak confirmed that 1,126 election workers will be deployed across 20 polling centres, with 109 polling channels ready for voters.

Final checks today included verifying ballot papers, indelible ink, and other election materials.

"We are completing final preparations, reviewing forms and relevant documents. Our teams are ensuring all procedures are in place for an efficient voting process," Ikmalrudin said at a press conference at Dewan Tunku Ismail Ibrahim.

Voters are reminded to bring their identification cards to expedite the voting process. Ikmalrudin also advised voters to plan their journey to polling centres, adding that rain is forecast for tomorrow afternoon.

"I encourage all registered voters to come out and fulfil their responsibility. Please check your polling centres in advance to avoid confusion," he added.

Campaigning for the by-election has proceeded smoothly, with both parties and their supporters cooperating with EC regulations.

The Mahkota (N.29) seat is a one-on-one contest between Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah and Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate Mohamad Haizan Jaafar.

Mahkota, located within the Kluang parliamentary constituency, has 66,318 registered voters.
