We can't become arrogant after Mahkota's win, says Umno's Asyraf

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the party's victory in the Mahkota by-election should not lead Umno to become arrogant.

Speaking to reporters after last night's Umno supreme council meeting, Asyraf Wajdi said the party should ensure that the mandate given by the people is fulfilled as best as possible.

"The meeting emphasised that this victory should not lead Umno to become arrogant.

"Instead, it should ensure that the mandate given by the people is fulfilled with humility and responsibility," he said.

He also thanked voters in the constituency for their trust in Barisan Nasional, adding that BN's big win was a clear signal that the public positively accepts the model of cooperation in the unity government.

This was based on the principles of moderation, tolerance and avoiding extremism in religious or ethnic sentiments that could undermine the harmony of a multiethnic society.

On Sept 28, BN retained the Mahkota state seat in Johor with a massive 20,648-vote majority.

BN candidate Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah garnered 27,995 votes to Perikatan Nasional's Mohamad Haizan Jaafar's 7,332 votes.
