PENAMPANG: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) should contest as many seats as possible to prevent outside parties from dominating, said Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) acting president Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam.
Dr Joachim, who also serves as Deputy Chief Minister, said that external parties may lack an understanding of Sabahans' true aspirations.
"With the 17th state election potentially approaching, preparation is critical to ensure Sabah stays on a stable, strong political path," he said.
"PBS, with its experience and strength, is committed to defending the seven seats it previously won and aims to expand by securing additional seats, particularly in traditional areas with solid support and established machinery."
He said that there is a need for strategic negotiations on seat allocation within GRS to avoid overlaps or vote splits that could favour opposition parties.
Addressing PBS members during the party's 29th annual convention at the Hongkod Koisaan Centre, Dr Joachim highlighted the importance of internal unity to face external challenges.
"If GRS maintains unity and avoids internal conflicts, the coalition has a strong chance of winning a majority of the seats, which will not only ensure political stability but also create the best opportunity to address long standing weaknesses in Sabah politics."
The event was attended by Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, party founder Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, and GRS coalition party members. However, no Pakatan Harapan representatives were present.
