LETTERS: International food travel guide TasteAtlas recently released its Top 10 Best Rated Breads in the World, in which Malaysia's roti canai earned recognition as the world's best bread.
This is not the first time Malaysian roti canai has been recognised. It ranked 9th on CNN's list of the top 40 Malaysian foods well loved by locals and visitors alike, according to NST's report on July 20, 2023.
Roti canai is a versatile dish that pairs well with an array of side dishes, whether chicken, lamb, beef, fish or a mix of curries, with a dash of sambal for an extra kick.
For those who prefer milder flavours, lentil dhal or even a touch of sweet white sugar can be the perfect complement. It also pairs with onions, eggs and bananas.
The versatility of roti canai, with all kinds of side dishes and ingredients, symbolises the multitude of people and cultures that coexist harmoniously in Malaysia. Roti canai is a meal for any time of the day too.
Lastly, roti canai earned its status as a national dish because it can be found on the menus of eateries belonging to different ethnic groups.
While it originated in Indian cuisine, roti canai has become a common dish for all Malaysians over the years.
The beautiful cultural exchange and mutual respect that define our nation are deeply embodied in this culinary fusion. "Jom makan roti canai" is often the warmest and most inviting gesture we can extend to one another.
As a Malaysian, roti canai is not only a delicious dish but also serves as a flavourful metaphor for our multicultural nation.
