Feng shui: Pond of luck

A fish pond can make a garden look picture-perfect. You could easily dig a pond in your backyard, fill it up with water and put in your favourite fish.

But using feng shui rules and principles to design a fish pond in your garden ensures your efforts reap beneficial chi, especially wealth luck.

Ask feng shui practitioners and they will tell you that the location of your pond is important. Water features can’t be located in just any sector without countering governing elements, such as the South (fire element) where water is destructive. East, southeast and north sectors are good locations!

The shape and size of your pond is equally important and must be considered carefully if you are looking for good feng shui for your home. The pond must not be too big and disproportionate to the house. The ideal shape for the pond is round, but you can have different shapes if you like.

According to feng shui, the depth and flow of the pond water will directly affect your wealth and income so you may want to ensure you get it right from the beginning. The pond shouldn’t be too shallow and the water must be clean so that your wealth will not be stagnant. It’s best to keep the pond filled with fresh flowing water. You may want to build a waterfall to recirculate the water. The water should flow towards the house so wealth flows to you and not away from you.

In terms of landscaping your pond, you can add several rocks and boulders as well as aquatic plants like lily pads and lotus blooms. Lily pads and lotus blooms as well as other aquatic plants are vital for the fish, especially the koi. Some plants will aid in the natural filtering of water.

You can grow flowers and trees at the pond but choose them wisely. Go for a balance in yin and yang colours for the blooming trees. Recommended colours are white (yin), yellow (yang), purple, red and orange. Some suggested flowers include blue lilies and blue/purple irises (for yin), and red begonias and yellow daisies (for yang).
