Feng Shui: Correcting sloped backyards

IF you are buying a house that has a sloping backyard, there are few things you can do to remedy the situation.

A sloped ground may cause water runoff, soil erosion, uneven moisture retention and difficulty in mowing the lawn or tilling flowerbeds.

It is also unsuitable for decks, patios and children’s play area.

A sloping backyard is considered bad Feng Shui as it leaves the house with no supporting energy.

This can cause difficulties such as sudden loss, reversal of fortune and health or financial problems.

What can you do if you really like the house and intend to buy it?

There are a few solutions like installing a fence or planting tall trees to provide back support for your house.

A slope without significant plants and trees will have little nourishing energy.

Plant a tall tree that has the same level as your roof or is slightly higher to raise the “qi” from the sloping backyard to your house and the roofline.

In an article entitled “Feng Shui Tips for a House with a Sloped Backyard” by Rodika Tchi in thespruce.com, the back of the house is the area of the tortoise, which is one of the four celestial Feng Shui animals.

The energy of the tortoise is believed to provide support and stability for the house. It is supposed to promote and maintain good supporting energy for the residents.

You can seek advice from your Feng Shui master on the best colour and material for the type of tortoise to place in your backyard.

Another solution is to build a wall along

the sloped area so that the energy level can be raised. You can use trees or tall shrubs as the wall.

According to Tchi, one of the best supportive structures for Feng Shui is a vertical wall garden.

A vertical wall garden is a collection of wall-mounted plants.

When creating a vertical wall garden, think about how much sun and water the plants will need.

Lower-maintenance plants such as succulents, ferns and low-ground covers are good candidates.

Tchi also mentioned lighting as an alternative solution to your sloped backyard.

Installing high lights at the end of your sloped backyard will help raise positive energy.

Try using efficient garden lighting. The better the lighting and the stronger the energy you create in your sloped backyard, the more support there will be for your home and family.

Alternatively, install a spotlight on the ground so that it shines at the roof.

The lighting from the ground to the roof helps direct “qi” to your home.

While you could do all the above and improve your house position, the most obvious solution

is to correct the downward slope of your backyard.

This can be done by erecting a retaining wall and backfilling the yard with dirt to create a significant alteration of the backward sloping.

If this isn’t feasible, add a few Feng Shui elements to correct this problem area.
