KL Wellness City will house a new international hospital costing RM860 mln

KL Wellness City Sdn Bhd will invest roughly RM860 million towards the KL International Hospital (KLIH) project, a new private hospital to be built within the mixed development of KL Wellness City (KLWC) in Kuala Lumpur.

The 624-bed hospital will provide a fully comprehensive and integrated ecosystem of healthcare services, including wellness and fitness facilities, with the option of expanding to 1,000 beds.

KL Wellness City managing director Datuk Dr. Colin Lee and Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) chief executive officer Datuk Arham Abdul Rahman jointly officiated the project.

KLIH is expected to start operating in the first quarter of 2026, according to a statement from the firm, and it will generate over 3,000 job possibilities.

The hospital will be furnished with modern medical tools and cutting-edge technology, including 22 operating rooms with hybrid angio and magnetic resonance imaging technology and robotic surgery.

It will offer advanced to straightforward procedures, as well as tertiary and secondary care services, to accommodate the whole spectrum of medical specialties.

Arham said Malaysia's healthcare system continues to be a key priority, and the government has set aside a sizeable budget for it.

For example, the Ministry of Health (MOH) earned the second-largest budget in 2022, totaling RM32.4 billion, after education, demonstrating the commitment of the government to safeguarding the wellbeing of the nation's citizens.

"Malaysia operates a two-tier healthcare system where the public and private sectors complement each other in providing healthcare, particularly in urban areas where the private sector fulfills a critical need which includes oncology, cardiology, and gene therapy," he said.

According to him, MIDA is optimistic that the KLIH project will bring positive economic benefits to Malaysia, in terms of creating high-quality jobs with the majority of 95 per cent Malaysians.

"Eventually, it will contribute towards making Malaysia a medical tourism hub in the region," he said.

KLWC, which has a gross development value of RM12 billion boasts The International Tertiary Hospital, medical suites, innovation laboratories, clinical R&D facilities, healthcare office towers, a retirement resort, a healthcare hub, wellness-centric serviced apartments, and a fitness-based Central Park.
