KUALA LUMPUR: Lee Chong Wei suffered another shocking defeat, when he was sent packing in the second round of the Denmark Open on Thursday.
The former world No 1 men's singles shuttler lost 21-17, 11-21, 21-19 to world No 14 HS Prannoy of India.
The defeat is Chong Wei's second to the Indian shuttler this year, after losing to him at the Indonesia Open in June.
The timing of the defeat could not have been worst for the three-time Olympic silver medallist, who celebrates his 35th birthday on Saturday.
At the previous edition, Chong Wei was sent packing in the quarter-finals by France's Brice Leverdez.
Following Chong Wei's exit, hopes now rest on mixed doubles duo Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie who are the only Malaysians to make it to the quarter-finals.
In the second round, Soon Huat-Shevon upset sixth seeds Wang Yilyu-Huang Dongping of China 21-14, 16-21, 21-18.
The Malaysians, who are on track to break into the world top 10 this year, play Niclas Nohr-Sara Thygesen of Denmark next for a place in the semi-finals.
In the women's doubles, Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean's run came to an end when they were shown the exit by Japan's Naoko Fukuman-Kurumi Yonao who notched a 21-18, 21-17 win.
