KUALA LUMPUR: Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik could be the next hope for Malaysia in the men’s doubles event following their impressive performance in the just-concluded India International Challenge in Mumbai on Sunday.
Aaron and Wooi Yik, who only resumed their partnership last month, reached the final before going down 21-6, 21-9 to Thailand’s Maneepong Jongjit-Nanthakarn Yordphaisong.
The result is considered impressive as it was only their second tournament as a pair.
In 2015, Aaron-Wooi Yik reached the fourth round of the World Junior Championships before the BA of Malaysia decided to pair them up with different partners.
National doubles coach Rosman Razak said Aaron-Wooi Yik have the potential to go far provided that they continue to work hard in training.
“I will submit a report on the young pair to doubles head coach Cheah Soon Kit for the next course of action and future plans,” said Rosman.
It was Aaron’s second final. The 20-year-old had reached the final of last year’s Switzerland International Series with Wong Wai Jun where they lost to compatriots Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani.
Wooi Yik, 19, is considered a doubles player with talent. He won the boys’ doubles bronze medal with Ooi Zi Heng at the Asian Junior Championships in 2015.
