Peng Soon: Malaysia will achieve target in Gold Coast

KUALA LUMPUR: Mixed doubles player Chan Peng Soon says Malaysia will have no issues retaining their mixed team gold medal in Gold Coast in April.

Those selected are three-time Olympic silver medallist Lee Chong Wei, Tan Wee Kiong, Goh V Shem, Peng Soon, Tan Kian Meng, Goh Jin Wei, Goh Liu Ying, Lai Pei Jing, Vivian Hoo and Woon Khe Wei.

“We have good depth and even our reserve shuttlers are capable of winning matches. We will do our best to return with titles,” said Peng Soon, who starts his Thailand Masters campaign with Liu Ying next week.

In the 2014 Glasgow edition, Malaysia won three of six gold medals on offer, achieved in the men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed team. Chong Wei did not play in 2014 due to injury.

For Gold Coast, the BA of Malaysia have set a three-gold medal target for the Chong Wei-led team.

On the Thailand Masters, Peng Soon said he is raring to resume his partnership with Liu Ying in the tournament.

“Liu Ying is doing very well in training. I think we will gel immediately despite not playing together (in tournaments) for almost six months,” he added.
