KUALA LUMPUR: National men’s doubles, Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong are determined in defending the men’s doubles gold that they won four years ago at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland even though they are currently enduring a barren spell since being reunited earlier this year.
Even though they faltered in two European tournaments — the German Open and the All England — Malaysia’s top men’s pair are adamant that such setbacks will not disrupt their focus but instead motivate them to perform even better in order to succeed.
After being bundled out in the semi-finals of the German Open last week, V Shem-Wee Kiong had to endure further disappointment when they were shown the exit in the quarter-finals of the All England earlier this morning (Saturday).
The Malaysian pair lost in straight games to experienced Danes, Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen 20-22, 11-21.
“They (Danish pair) played very well today. In the second game we made too many silly mistakes and we just could not cope with their attacking onslaught.
“Whatever it is, this loss will not break our spirit but instead fire us up to succeed at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia next month.
We are confident that we can successfully defend our title that we won four years ago,” said V Shem when contacted in Birmingham.
Four years ago in Glasgow, Scotland, V Shem-Wee Kiong won the men’s doubles gold apart from helping the national squad to the mixed team event gold.
The last time V Shem-Wee Kiong were disbanded as a pair was for four months following a dip in their form and performances before they were reunited once again in January.
Their last success was in the 2016 Super Series Finals in Dubai, United Arab Emirates — three months after they won silver at the Rio Olympic Games in Brazil.
