KUALA LUMPUR: The Speedy Tigresses bounced back from two losses to upset world No.15 South Korea 2-1 in the Asian Champions Trophy (ACT) at Rajgir Hockey Stadium, Bihar, India, today.
World No. 24 Malaysia were not expected to beat the South Koreans after their defeats by India (4-0) and China (5-0).
With the win, Malaysia moved up to fourth placing with three points from three matches, and they now have a fighting chance to finish top four among six teams to qualify for the semi-finals.
Malaysia have two more matches to play - against world No. 11 Japan on Saturday before wrapping up the round robin tournament against world No. 29 Thailand on Sunday.
Malaysia need at least another win to seal a place in the last four.
The Koreans took the lead through Cheon Eunbi in the 15th minute off a field goal. But Malaysia hit back with two goals through Zati Alyani Zubir (36th) and Nur Shamine Azureen Badusha (51st).
Malaysia coach Nasihin Nubli said he was relieved that his team finally secured their first win.
"The Koreans controlled the game and they had 13 penalty corners but my players were disciplined and defended well."
In the ACT in Ranchi, India., last year, Malaysia drew 1-1 against South Korea.
