Chong Wei eager to win his 12th Malaysia Open crown

KUALA LUMPUR: World No 6 Lee Chong Wei has promised to give his best at next week’s Malaysia Open in pursuit of winning his 12th men’s singles title in the competition at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil.

National coach Hendrawan said: “Although, the Malaysia Open is not Chong Wei’s main target this year, the 36-year-old is still focused on doing well as it is a special tournament for him.”

Chong Wei is using the tournament to prepare for next month’s World Championships in China and the Indonesia Asian Games in August.

“The three-time Olympic silver medallist is determined to earn a good result in the Malaysia Open as it will put him on a positive platform for the Asian Games, which is his main target this year.

“However, he is under no pressure going into the tournament. Whatever happens, the target is still the Asian Games,” said Hendrawan.

The Malaysia Open has attracted several notable names including reigning world champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark and China’s Chen Long, Shi Yuqi and Lin Dan.

“It will be a good test for Chong Wei. If he does well, it will give him the motivation for priority tournaments,” he added.
