Jin Wei wins country's first YOG gold

KUALA LUMPUR: Shuttler Goh Jin Wei created history on Friday when she clinched Malaysia's first Youth Olympic Games (YOG) gold medal in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The 18-year-old, also Malaysia's YOG flag-bearer, overcame a first game blemish to edge China's Wang Ziyi 16-21, 21-13, 21-19 in the girls' singles final.

With Jin Wei's success, Malaysia have achieved their one-gold target.

She is also the first player in badminton to win both the World Junior Championships (2015) and YOG titles.

"After losing the first game, I used all my experience to minimise mistakes and the move paid dividends," Jin Eei said on the Badminton World Federation (BWF) official website.

"This result will encourage me to work harder for the future."

Men's singles shuttler Cheam June Wei also clinched a gold in the Nanjing edition four years ago.

He won the mixed doubles with Hong Kong's Ng Tsz Yau but the gold was not credited into the contingent's medal tally as they were competing under the mixed-NOCs (National Olympic Committees) flag.
