KUALA LUMPUR: An emotional Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin broke down in tears today on his decision to leave the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) after 15 years.
The 27-year-old national champion admitted that he found it hard to cope with the the national body's strict regime.
Though Iskandar will be on his own as a professional, he hopes to qualify for the 2020 Olympics.
"It was a tough decision to make but I still want to play in the Olympics.
"I believe that when I'm outside (BAM), I will be more at peace with myself," said the former world junior runner-up at the Academy Badminton Malaysia today.
Iskandar, who has been struggling at international level, met BAM president Datuk Seri Norza Zakaria recently to discuss his intention to quit the national team at the end of the year.
Looking up to men's singles head coach, Misbun Sidek as his father, the shuttler broke down when asked to explain the reason for his decision.
"I have apologised to coach Misbun because I did not speak to him first. That is between the two of us. He is like a father to me," added the Muar-born shuttler.
Iskandar, who was suspended by BAM for three months earlier this year due to disciplinary issue, admitted that it was one of the reason for his leaving the national body.
"I would be lying if I said the suspension didn't affect me. However when I'm outside, I will have the support of my family."
Iskandar said he will remain with BAM until the end of the year, as he looks for sponsors to kickstart his professional career.
