Mew Choo happy to have her man back

KUALA LUMPUR: Honeymoon or no honeymoon, Wong Mew Choo is just happy to have her man back.

The former Malaysian No 1 women's singles couldn't hide her emotions today, when she watched her husband, Lee Chong Wei broke down in tears in front of a packed press conference as he announced his retirement as a player after 19 years.

Mew Choo, who retired in 2011, married Chong Wei in 2012 and the two are parents to Kingston Lee, 6, and Terrance Lee, 4.

During the press conference, after a sad moment, Chong Wei cheered up and even joked with journalists about his long overdue honeymoon with his wife.

Mew Choo, 36, when asked about it, said: “Honestly, I don't know how we're going to do this whole ‘honeymoon’ thing because we are now parents to two growing boys.

“It's not my main priority. I am just happy because finally the boys can have more of their dad.

“They say children only grow once, and you don't want to miss that.”

Mew Choo was one of Malaysia's brightest stars but unfortunately injury forced her to hang up her racquet earlier than expected.

One of her most talked about achievements was when she stunned China's Xie Xinfang to bag the China Open title in 2007.

For the record, Xingfang is the wife of five-time world champion Lin Dan, who will be remembered as Chong Wei's greatest ever rival.

On what went through her mind, when Chong Wei decided to try and make a fifth Olympic appearance in Tokyo next year, Mew Choo shared: “Of course we sat and discussed about it, as a family, as his wife.

“I do not think I was the only one worried, because the whole nation rallied behind him... sometimes words alone are not enough to describe moments like this.

“Whatever decision he made, I respected, because as a former athlete myself, I know what it feels like.

“You won't want to say no before giving it a shot. I feel sad because he will not be able to realise his dream but I am also grateful to have him back, to have that time with his sons.”

Mew Choo finally added that if there was one place she would want to go with Chong Wei for their honeymoon, it would be Los Angeles.

“In 2005, the both of us were in LA for the World Championships and I remember telling him that I would like to come back here again.

“I don't know, we need to plan this out first, but it will be nice to go back there with him,” Mew Choo said.
