Kisona's court craft belies her size

S. KISONA is skinny compared to her peers in the national women’s squad, but it has not stopped her from making headlines in the sport.

Yesterday, the 21-year-old produced a commendable performance to win her second women’s singles title of the season at the Sydney International.

The World No 149, who won the Hellas Open in Greece last month, defeated Japan’s Shiori Ebihara 21-18, 21-13 in the final.

Recently, women’s coach Tey Seu Bock commented on the Seremban-born’s physique, saying she was thin and how he needs to find a different method to push her to become a stronger player.

Kisona said: “It is true. I am skinny but there isn’t much I can do to bulk up.

“However, there are other top players who are similar to me in terms of physique.

“I must study them and see what works.”

The BA of Malaysia (BAM) are currently in a dilemma as Goh Jin Wei will not likely defend her Sea Games title in December due to a mysterious stomach ailment.

And if the 19-year-old former world junior champion does not make the trip, Kisona would need to step up.

“Jin Wei is a great player but unfortunately, she has this stomach ailment which needs attention.

“I am still working on myself but I have to be ready too.

“My overall target remains the same. To improve on my rankings and start playing in bigger tournaments,” she added.

In the men’s singles final, Lim Chong King couldn't make it a double following a 21-8, 21-15 defeat to Japan’s Yusuke Onodera.

And in the women's doubles final, Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah lost 21-17, 17-21, 21-13 to Taiwan's Cheng Yu Chieh-Tseng Yu Chi.
