Hon Jian-Ee Wei are champs

Choong Hon Jian-Toh Ee Wei are certainly rising to attention after grabbing the Slovenia International for their second straight title.

Playing in only their second tournament together, Hon Jian-Ee Wei hit the mark as they scored a superb 21-18, 21-18 win over Indonesia's Muh Putra Erwiansyah-Sofy Al Mushira Asharunnisa in the mixed doubles final at the Dras Sports Centre in Maribor yesterday.

Earlier in the day, the national back-up pair had booked their spot in the final after taking out eighth seeds Kristoffer Knudsen-Malena Norrman 23-21, 21-17.

It is a superb achievement for the World No 263 after their victory in the Polish Open in March.

It also justifies the BA of Malaysia's (BAM) move to invest in youth after dropping Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie and Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing from the national team earlier this year.

For the 20-year-old Ee Wei, it was also a successful return to the national fold albeit as a mixed doubles shuttler.

The Melaka-born was a promising women's doubles shuttler as a junior after finishing runners-up with Pearly Tan at the World Junior Championships in 2018.

She was, however, dropped before being handed a second chance earlier this year.

Meanwhile, women's doubles Low Yeen Yuan-Valeree Siow also reached the final after overcoming Ukraine's Mariia Stoliarenko-Yelyzaveta Zharka 13-21, 21-13, 21-12 in the semi-finals yesterday.

The Malaysians played third seeds Isabella Nielsen-Marie Louise Steffensen in yesterday's late final.

The Danish pair had denied an all-Malaysian final by beating Cheng Su Hui-Cheng Su Yin 15-21, 21-17, 21-19.

Men's pair Beh Chun Meng-Goh Boon Zhe and women's singles Siti Nurshuhaini Azman were shown the door in the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, Malaysia's challenge at the Spain Masters ended in the quarter-finals after men's singles Cheam June Wei and women's pair Anna Cheong Ching Yik-Yap Cheng Wen both bowed out on Friday.

World No 75 June Wei was out of his depth on the day as he fell to a tame 21-9, 21-10 defeat to World No 19 Shesar Hiren Rhustavito of Indonesia.

Fifth seeds Anna-Cheng Wen gave a good fight but still fell short in a 13-21, 21-18, 21-17 defeat to top seeds Amalie Magelund-Freja Ravn of Denmark.
