Taking the fight to the Great Danes

The young and inexperienced Malaysian women's team face an uphill task in the Uber Cup Finals starting in Aarhus, Denmark, today.

But don't write them off yet.

Malaysia are capable of pulling off some surprises in Group D which also has 14-time winners China, hosts Denmark and Canada.

The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) are not giving up on them, and have in fact, set a quarter-final target.

BAM coaching director Wong Choong Hann pointed out that the women's team relish the challenge, and they have the right attitude.

And Choong Hann is hoping for Malaysia to upstage the Danes in their opening match today.

"We have to acknowledge that Denmark is one of the strongest teams in the world, and we don't have that depth compared to them.

"But we know that beating Denmark is certainly crucial, and I believe the players are ready to give it their best.

"In terms of preparation, the coaching team has been very satisfied with the attitude and the fighting spirit shown by the players.

"This is the kind of fighting spirit we hope to see them take on court, regardless whether it's the Uber Cup or other events in the future.

"Even in training they have been fired up, and this is just the right attitude that they need in order to go far."

Choong Hann, however, conceded that China are just too strong for Malaysia, and the focus is solely on taking on Denmark first.

For the Denmark clash, Malaysia are counting on world No 53 S. Kisona in the first singles and world No 123 Eoon Qi Xuan in the second singles.

The third singles will be either 18-year-old K. Letshanaa or 17-year-old Siti Nurshuhaini Azman.

In doubles, gritty world No 18 Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah, who enjoyed a memorable Sudirman Cup campaign, are set to lead with either world No 68 Teoh Mei Xing-Yap Ling or Lee Meng Yean-Go Pei Kee as second doubles.

The Danes are likely to line up with world No 12 Mia Blichfeldt, world No 23 Line Christophersen and world no 35 Line Kjaersfeldt in singles.

Their doubles challenge will be led by world No 16 Maiken Fruergaard-Sara Thygesen and world No 25 Amalie Magelund-Freja Ravn.
