Backups to the fore at Sea Games

Sending a team of backup shuttlers and juniors doesn't mean Malaysia are giving up on defending their three gold medals at the Sea Games.

And BAM coaching director Wong Choong Hann has urged the players for May's Hanoi Sea Games to rise to the challenge.

BAM have selected a largely inexperienced squad for the biennial games due to the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals being held in Bangkok in the same month.

The men's team will consist of Lim Chong King, Lee Shun Yang, Jacky Kok Jing Hong, Justin Hoh (men's singles) and Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, Haikal Nazri-Wan Arif Wan Junaidi (men's doubles).

The women's squad are made up of Siti Nurshuhaini Azman, Loh Zhi Wei, Ong Xin Yee, Siti Zulaikha Azmi (singles) and Yap Ling-Go Pei Kee, Cheng Su Yin-Cheng Su Hui (doubles).

Also selected are mixed pairs Hoo Pang Ron-Cheah Yee See and Chen Tang Jie-Peck Yen Wei.

"The young players need to be given a platform to challenge themselves," said Choong Hann.

"I certainly believe that some of them, especially from men's singles and women's singles, should take this opportunity to at least challenge for a medal.

"Even though we are sending a weakened team, it doesn't mean we are just giving away the gold medals to the other countries.

"I believe we still have gold medal opportunities, especially from men's doubles and overall, I believe those who have been selected, will be ready to put up a challenge.

BAM coaching director Rexy Mainaky added: "We must be ready to put our trust on them and prepare them well for the challenge."
