Choong Hann promoted to chief coach in Hong Kong

KUALA LUMPUR: Wong Choong Hann will assume the role of head coach for the second time in his career when he takes charge of the Hong Kong national badminton team from Oct 1.

After joining Hong Kong BA (HKBA) as men's singles coach last year, the 47-year-old Malaysian will assume his new post from the long-serving Tim He who retired this month.

Prior to moving to Hong Kong last year, Choong Hann served as BA of Malaysia's (BAM) coaching director from 2018 to 2022.

He was redesignated as BAM singles coaching director in December, 2022 until his resignation in June, 2023.

His experience as BAM coaching director was a major factor in HKBA picking him to lead the Hong Kong national team.

Choong Hann said: "I thank HKBA for giving me the opportunity to lead their national team.

"Also not forgetting the chance to serve BAM as their coaching director previously, which had helped me in my progress as an elite coach.

"I will have to constantly pick up new challenges to become a more complete coach and I am looking forward to this new role in evolving myself towards that."

The Hong Kong men's singles shuttlers under Choong Hann are Lee Cheuk Yiu (world No. 16), Angus Ng (No. 25), Jason Gunawan (No. 49) and Chan Yin Chak (No. 93).

Choong Hann's appointment came on the back of Angus winning the Macau Open title today after beating Jason Teh of Singapore 21-19, 21-17 in the final.

Meanwhile James Chua has resigned as BAM men's singles coach and will become the Czech Republic head coach from Oct 1.
