Comeback kid Jin Wei advances to Korea Open quarter-finals

KUALA LUMPUR: Goh Jin Wei stole the show yet again as five Malaysian representatives continued their march into quarter-finals of the Korea Open today.

Two-time world junior champion Jin Wei, playing her first tournament in 10 months after coming out of retirement, beat Lee Se Yeon 17-21, 21-17, 21-12 to reach her first quarter-final in a Super 500 meet since the 2019 Malaysia Open.

Jin Wei will face world No 20 Kim Ga Eun, another protege of former Malaysian international Wong Tat Meng, who's now the singles head coach of the Korean national team.

Ga Eun will be a tough nut to crack, more so after she stunned Olympic champion Chen Yu Fei in the other last 16 match today.

There would not be an all-Malaysian affair in the men's singles after Cheam June Wei failed to join Ng Tze Yong in the last eight.

Tze Yong booked his place with a convincing 21-14, 21-19 win over homester Kim Dong Hun while June Wei went down fighting 21-14, 17-21, 21-17 to China's Weng Hong Yang.

Awaiting world No 45 Tze Yong next is China's Weng Hong Yang.

World No 11 Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi are the sole Malaysian survivors in the men's doubles after fellow professionals Tan Kian Meng-Tan Wee Kiong and Goh V Shem-Low Juan were shown the exit.

After overcoming former world junior champions Leo Rolly Carnando-Daniel Marrhin, Yew Sin-Ee Yi will get the chance to avenge on their Swiss Open quarter-final loss a fortnight ago to Indonesia's Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Rian Ardianto today.

Alfian-Rian progressed after being stretched by Kian Meng-Wee Kiong 19-21, 21-13, 21-13.

V Shem-Juan Shen failed to advance after losing 21-6, 22-20 to home duo Kang Min Hyuk-Seo Seung Jae.

Malaysia's challenge in the women's doubles came to an end with the elimination of Vivian Hoo-Lim Chiew Sien.

In the mixed doubles, Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing and Yew Sin-Goh Liu Ying kept Malaysia's challenge alive after Swiss Open finalists Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie were sent packing.
