KUALA LUMPUR: Independent duo Tan Wee Kiong-Tan Kian Meng finally ended their men's doubles first-round jinx in their fifth attempt when they defeated Ronan Labar-Lucas Corvee 21-17, 20-22, 21-18 to advance to the second round of the Hylo Open in Germany today.
It was the world No 45 pair's first win since their run to the last 16 of the Malaysia Open in July.
Wee Kiong-Kian Meng were first-round casulties at the Malaysia Masters, Singapore Open, Denmark Open and the French Open.
They will next take on China's Liang Wei Keng-Wang Chang, the Japan Open winners, for a place in the quarter-finals tomorrow.
Meanwhile, world No 12 Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie earned sweet revenge over compatriots Hoo Pang Ron-Toh Ee Wei with a hard-fought 21-11, 12-21, 21-17 win.
Soon Huat-Shevon were beaten by the world No 37 in the last 16 of the Indonesia Open. They will play England's Gregory Mairs-Jenny Moore next.
The Malaysians will be looking to end their European stint with a flourish by responding to their first-round exit in Paris last week.
Soon Huat-Shevon did well at the Denmark Open two weeks ago, going all the way to the semi-finals before losing to eventual champions Zheng Si Wei-Huang Ya Qiong of China.
