KUALA LUMPUR: National coaching director Rexy Mainaky described Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik's come-from-behind victory in the bronze medal playoff at the Paris Olympics on Sunday as a miracle.
Rexy was particularly impressed with their fighting spirit throughout the tournament, especially during the bronze medal playoff, when they saved four match points in the second game before winning in the decider against Denmark's world No. 2 Anders Skaarup Rasmussen-Kim Astrup.
Speaking to Timesport, Rexy said Aaron-Wooi Yik put in a lot of effort and deserved the bronze medal.
Aaron-Wooi Yik also won a bronze at the postponed Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
"I am grateful that Aaron-Wooi Yik won their second Olympic bronze. They deserved this medal after their battle against the Danish pair, losing the first game and trailing 20-16 in the second. They pulled off a miracle," said Rexy from Paris.
"Aaron-Wooi Yik played with composure and kept their focus and motivation high to achieve an important victory.
"They proved they are among the top five pairs in the world with this bronze," added the 1996 Atlanta Games gold medallist.
After this, Aaron-Wooi Yik will focus on performing better in Open tournaments to qualify for the World Tour Finals in Hangzhou, China, in December.
