More bonuses on the way for Aaron-Wooi Yik

KUALA LUMPUR: Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik are set to receive at least RM120,000 from the BA of Malaysia (BAM) for winning the men's doubles bronze medal at the Paris Olympics.

BAM secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh confirmed that the duo will be rewarded according to the existing bonus scheme, which is unlikely to be less than the RM60,000 each they received for their Tokyo achievement three years ago.

"We have our own incentive scheme for top performers in major events," Kenny said.

"The final amount will be discussed at the upcoming BAM council meeting."

The reward could potentially increase, as Kenny hinted:

"Let's see if the council wants to give more."

To date, Aaron-Wooi Yik are guaranteed RM100,000 through the National Sports Incentive Scheme (Shakam) and a Chery Tiggo 7 Pro SUV (worth RM123,800).

It is yet unclear whether they will receive one vehicle to share or one each, as Chery Malaysia has pledged different models for gold, silver, and bronze medallists.

Further bonuses are expected from their sponsors, including isotonic drinks maker 100PLUS, home appliances maker Haier, and property developer Platinum Victory.

For reference, 100PLUS awarded Aaron-Wooi Yik RM60,000 for their Tokyo bronze.

State governments are also likely to contribute, as Melaka and Federal Territories each provided RM50,000 after their Tokyo success.
