Justin Hoh is Sukma badminton king

KUCHING: Federal Territories (FT) shuttler Justin Hoh smashed aside his national teammate, Ong Zhen Yi, of Penang, for the men's singles gold in the Sarawak Malaysia Games (Sukma) at the Sibu Indoor Stadium today.

The world No. 68 comfortably won the final, 21-16, 21-15, in straight games.

World No. 131 Zhen Yi staged brief comebacks in both games, but Justin stayed composed and stymied any attempts from the former.

It was Justin's third title of the year having won the Saipan International last month and the Slovenia Open in May.

In the bronze medal match, Selangor's Chua Kim Sheng defeated FT's Hooi Shao Herng 21-11, 21-15.

National women's singles player Wong Ling Ching, representing Sarawak, lived up to her favourite tag by defeating Penang's Oo Shan Zi 21-12, 21-15 in the final.

Selangor's K. Letshanaa won the bronze after teammate Siti Nurshuhaini Azman had to retire with the scores at 21-16, 16-11 (in the second game).

In the men's doubles final, Selangor's Lok Hong Quan-Faiq Haziq Masawi defeated Penang's national No. 14 Goh Boon Zhe-Rayner Beh 19-21, 21-19, 21-15.

In the bronze medal playoff, FT's Bryan Jeremy Goonting-Fazriq Razif defeated Selangor's Goh Yi Qin-Wong Vin Sean 21-15, 20-22, 21-12.

Johor's Dania Sofea Zaidi-Low Zi Yu won the women's doubles gold, overpowering Perak's Chong Jie Yu-Vannee Gobi Yap 19-21, 21-19, 21-12.

Kedah's Cheng Su Hui-Cheng Su Yin won bronze after downing FT's Amanda Yap-Ong Xin Yee 21-13, 21-17.

Melaka's national juniors Aaron Tai-Noraqilah Maisarah Ramdan secured the mixed doubles gold by defeating Tan Wei Liang-Khor Jing Wen from Penang 21-17, 21-16.

The bronze went to Selangor's Haris Sufian Shazlan-Wong Zi Yi who beat Sarawak's Jeremy Juan-Genevie Lim 21-18, 11-21, 23-21.
