'Dropped shuttlers can continue at proposed Asian centre'

KUALA LUMPUR: Those dropped from national teams could join the planned Asian High-Performance Badminton Centre.

Former BAM high performance director Datuk James Selvaraj said the centre could also benefit those not selected to join the national set-up.

"They can utilise this high performance centre to elevate their skill. Some players, who are cut from national teams, can also join to continue training and improving.

"Sometimes, players are late bloomers and they are cut from the national teams too soon. Who knows, after spending time at this centre, they can 'wake up'."

James pointed out that the Academy Badminton Malaysia - where national teams train - and the Asian High-Performance Badminton Centre will be separate entities with their own management, coaches and staff.

Earlier this week, former BAM president Tan Sri Norza Zakaria announced plans to establish an Asian High-Performance Badminton Centre in Malaysia after he was elected Olympic Council of Asia vice-president for Southeast Asia.

The primary goal is to support the growth of badminton throughout Asia by offering world-class training facilities in Malaysia, especially for emerging national Olympic councils in the region.
