Xin Yee and Zi Yu-Dania pull off surprises in Nanchang

KUALA LUMPUR: Unseeded girls' singles player Ong Xin Yee and girls' doubles Low Zi Yu-Dania Sofea Zaidi stunned their seeded opponents in the third round of the World Junior Championships in Nanchang, China, today.

Xin Yee disposed of Thailand's fifth-seed Anyapat Phichitpreechasa 21-16, 21-16.

Zi Yu-Dania Sofea upstaged ninth-seeded Phattharin Aiamvareesrisakul-Napapakorn Tungkasatan of Thailand 21-17, 24-22 to advance to the fourth round.

BAM head of juniors Jeffer Rosobin praised Xin Yee's composure against a higher-seeded opponent.

"Xin Yee was very calm and she controlled the game really well. Dania-Zi Yu showed tremendous fighting spirit and that got them the win," Jeffer said.

Earlier, Dania Sofea teamed up with mixed doubles partner Datu Anif Isaac Datu Asrah to beat Nicholas Kat-Li Zheng Yan from Singapore 24-22, 21-16.

Zi Yu is the youngest member of the Malaysian contingent at 14 years old.

Ninth-seeded boys' singles Faiq Haziq was made to work for his victory against American Garret Tan, 19-21, 21-8, 22-20.

He later returned to the court to partner

Lok Hong Quan to defeat the American pairing of Chen Youshi-Zhang Tian Qi, 21-4, 21-15.

Xin Yee also pulled double duty, partnering Carmen Ting to send Taiwan pair Chou Yun An-Huang Ke Xin home 21-17, 21-9.

Boys' doubles top seeds Aaron Tai-Kang Khai Xing defeated India's C. Bhavya-C Param 21-14, 21-16.

Girls' singles Lim Zhi Shi defeated Germany's Gloria Poluektov 21-8, 21-13 to advance to the fourth round.

However, mixed doubles Loh Ziheng-Clarissa San lost to Japan's Shuji Sawada-Aya Tamaki 21-19, 21-8.

Girls' doubles Wee Yee Tern-Nicole Tan were sent packing by Taiwan's Chiu Shao Hua-Chen Yan Fei 21-19, 21-15.

Kong Zhou Swin's campaign in the boys' singles ended at the hands of India's S. Pranay, following a 21-11, 21-13 setback, while Sng Wei Ming joined his teammate on the early flight home after losing to Taiwan's Chiang Tzu Chieh 21-16, 21-16.

Nicole Chau-Noraqilah Maisarah Ramdan battled hard against eighth seeds Agathe Cuevas-Kathell Desmots-Chacun of France, but succumbed 20-22, 21-17, 22-20.
