Overwhelming crowdfunding response led to Qi Xuan's bank account being blocked [WATCH]

KUALA LUMPUR: The response from the public has been so overwhelming that injured shuttler Ng Qi Xuan's bank account ended up being blocked.

This is due to the sudden influx of funds into her bank account, and leading to her bank taking precautionary action.

Earlier the independent player has turned to crowdfunding on her Instagram in an appeal for help to pay her medical bills.

Qi Xuan needs RM25,000 to RM30,000 for surgery on her dislocated right knee, but her insurance does not cover this.

On Saturday, Qi Xuan suffered a horrific injury when she and Yap Rui Chen were competing against Teoh Mei Xing and Go Pei Kee in the women's doubles semi-final of the Malaysia Super 100 at Stadium Juara.

After winning the first game 22-20 and leading 20-18 in the second, Qi Xuan went up for a smash but landed awkwardly and screamed in agony. She was later stretchered off the court.

"My parents are retired, and I have no income now as I am unable to coach with my injured knee.

"I humbly ask your help to get back on my feet. Your support means the world to me, and I wouldn't ask if I didn't really need it," Qi Xuan wrote in her Instagram post, which also included her bank account number.

Meanwhile Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has told the National Sports Institute (NSI) to provide assistance to Qi Xuan.

Yeoh said she has been informed by BAM secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh that Qi Xuan can do her rehab at Academy Badminton Malaysia.

"I have contacted NSI chief executive officer Ahmad Faedzal Ramli to gather information on what kind of assistance we can offer the athlete," said Yeoh after the closing of the Women in Sports seminar at a hotel in Subang Jaya today.
