Former All England champion and India's current head coach, Pullela Gopichand, slammed the decision to drop badminton from the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
"The decision represents a significant lapse not just for Indian badminton, but for the sport worldwide, lacking clear reasoning and jeopardising its growth," stated Gopichand, the 2000 All England champion, on his X account.
"I'm deeply appalled and disappointed by the decision to exclude badminton from the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow — a judgement that appears aimed at stunting the progress of nations like India.
"It is crucial that we raise our voices and bring this issue to the appropriate authorities to ensure badminton continues to thrive and inspire future generations.
"As the sport experiences exponential growth globally, the reasons for its exclusion must be scrutinised and discussed with relevant stakeholders.
"We cannot allow such shortsighted decisions to undermine the progress we have tirelessly achieved."
Meanwhile, Badminton England (BE) also expressed its disappointment over badminton's exclusion from the games. BE chief executive officer Sue Storey said England will not witness a sport that has given many magical moments in the past.
"I am heartbroken for the players who we were all looking forward to competing on such a big stage, many of whom have been working incredibly hard to qualify for and peak in time for these games.
"We wish Glasgow the very best in hosting the games in 2026 and look forward to the opportunity to bring badminton to the wider world at future Commonwealth Games."
Diving, squash, rhythmic gymnastics and table tennis were also dropped, but for India, Malaysia and England, the omission of badminton has hit them hard as they have been traditionally successful in the sport.
