Jin Wei eyes a better game after LASIK surgery

KUALA LUMPUR: Goh Jin Wei will literally eye an improvement in her play following LASIK surgery.

Malaysia's top women's shuttler doesn't have to wear contact lenses anymore after undergoing the eye surgery recently.

Jin Wei's coach, Nova Armada, said her performance earlier in tournaments was affected due to wearing contact lenses.

Nova said the independent shuttler had successfully undergone the procedure after the recent China Masters and she should be able to resume training tomorrow.

"She had been wearing contact lenses for some time now and this affected her performance in tournaments. She often had eye irritation and infections," said Nova.

"After the surgery, Jin Wei's visibility should be better and I'm looking forward to seeing improvement in her performance.

"Even minor details like this can help her considerably on the World Tour next year."

Health issues have often affected Jin Wei after she underwent colectomy surgery in 2019 but this did not deter the iron-willed shuttler from qualifiyng for the Paris Olympics in August.

Now that her eye issue has been sorted out. Nova said world No. 43 Jin Wei can focus on her training for the Malaysia Open on Jan 7-12. She is the only local women's singles player to have qualified for the Super 1000 event.

"Jin Wei should return to training on Wednesday and we have one month to prepare for the Malaysia Open.

"I hope that her improved eyesight will make her more confident in her play," added Nova.
