KUCHING: Isabelle Chiyi Buckley was as determined as ever to break the games record in her pet event - women's 50 metre breaststroke - and she did just that at the Sarawak Malaysia Games (Sukma) today.
The Federal Territories (FT) swimmer erased the former games record held by Christina Loh (33.29s, 2016) after clocking 32.83s in the morning preliminaries.
She lowered the record again in the final, touching the wall in 32.76s to secure gold.
Johor's Alicia Li (33.10s) won silver while Selangor's Low Ee Mang (33.68) completed the podium.
Isabelle was pleased with her overall performance at the Pandelela Rinong Aquatics Centre.
"I definitely wanted to break the meet record, the 50m breaststroke is my best event," said Isabelle.
"I think I have improved a lot, especially throughout the past year which I'm really happy about.
"I will be next focusing on the Sea Age Group Championships in December and I will also be trying to qualify for the Thailand Sea Games next year."
Isabelle, born and raised in Malaysia, is of mixed Malaysian-English parentage.
"My mother is Malaysian Chinese and my dad is English. They are here to watch me swim today," added the 15-year-old.
"They told me before the race not to be nervous and that they have faith in me."
The women's 4x100m freestyle relay games record also fell as Selangor powered to gold in 3:55.84s, beating the former mark of 3:56.51s set by Sabah in 2016.
FT (4:02.06s) claimed silver while Sabah (4:03.49s) settled for bronze.
