Liek Hou falters in singles, shines in doubles

KUALA LUMPUR: Paralympic champion Cheah Liek Hou's unbeaten run in the SUV men's singles ended at the Bahrain International in Manana, but the Malaysian had the consolation of winning the men's doubles crown with Fareez Anuar on Sunday.

Ironically, it was Fareez who handed world No. 1 Liek Hou his first defeat of the year as the former secured a 21-17, 20-22, 23-21 win in the semi-finals.

However, world No. 6 Fareez could not end his fine run in style, as he lost to world No. 4 Dheva Anrimusthi of Indonesia 21-15, 21-17 in the final.

Liek Hou and Fareez made amends by winning the men's doubles crown, beating Dheva-Hafizh Briliansyah 13-21, 21-17, 21-16 in a 59-minute final.

"This is the last tournament of the year and there is still success by winning the doubles title and a bronze medal in the singles," posted Liek Hou on Facebook.

Liek Hou had won the world title in Pattaya, the Spanish International Para Grade 1 and Grade 2, the Four Nations International Para International in Glasgow and the Paris Paralympics.

The 36-year-old Malaysian was involved in many promotional activities and had also taken a break after securing his second Paralympic gold in September.
